(February 11, 2018, 11:10 am)Milkjetstream I've planned on sticking with Windows 7 until the support for it ends in a couple of years, then jump ship to Linux Mint since not only a lot does it have a lot of support, but you can run the majority of Windows applications with WineHQ and PlayonLinux plus unlike Windows, it's all free.

So you want to stick with the lagging when looking at a website or looking at your emails?

Not after I save up enough for a 240gb SSD and 16gb of ram. Even though that's overkill for simple tasks, that should futureproof for a good few years.

Solid State is the way of the future. Are you planning on dividing it up into smaller portions to store stuff? Or just leave it the way it is? I would love to get a solid state but I want mine to be in tb than gb.

Probably leave it as it is. But with my porn collection and ripped DVD files, I'm still deciding on if I should invest in a cloud service or if I should invest in a external SSD. Right now I have about 20ish GB worth of porn, about 40gb of ripped movies and almost 5gb of music. The price of a SSD to accommodate everything and still have room for me to expand upon is still crazy expensive, so it all depends if the prices of an SSD 500gb or bigger goes down within a couple of years.

I say go with the external SSD since in the long run, it'll be a lot cheaper than paying about $120 a year for enough space on Google Drive.

Sorry, just catching up on a few replies here...

(February 10, 2018, 2:24 am)Akhenaten I miss the days when Windows was focused strictly on productivity. Windows 8 was so bad I refused to install it anywhere at all, but Windows 10 isn't much better

Under the hood, Windows 8/8.1 was better than Windows 7. It sounds to me like you're getting too hung up on the Start screen vs. Start menu, which was indeed shittastic for non-touchscreen users but could easily be mitigated with Classic Shell or Start8.

I'm not a huge fan of 10's UI but the OS itself does introduce some nice features, and the UI changes aren't gonna go away. Might as well get used to them.

(February 10, 2018, 9:19 am)TacoTamale Windows 7 was the last decent OS for me. And another thing I don't like nowadays is how laptops are now being built with the ram/hdd permanently soldered onto the motherboard so you'll have no way of upgrading it down the road.

Remember that computers tend to be geared toward the lowest common denominator. Most people have never cared about being able to upgrade their computers, but being able to swap out these parts came in handy if they ever failed. Nowadays, the excellent reliability of RAM and solid state storage reduces the need for replaceable parts, and making them non-replaceable allows them to reduce the physical size and weight of the device (which is definitely something people care about). There will always be computers available for those of us who need to be able to swap out parts, they're just becoming more niche.

(February 10, 2018, 9:43 am)TommyDe It seems that we are all having problems with the latest version of Windows 10. My laptop came with Windows 7 then I was able to get the free upgrade to Windows 10 for my laptop. Then last year when I did the latest Windows 10 version update it corrupted my had drive. I was able to get it back to Windows 10 Version 1603. That's because Windows Version 1709 is not compatible with my laptop. Now my laptop forced me to upgrade to Windows 10 Version 1709 and I have no WiFi. I'm currently using Ethernet to go online when I'm home.

Just go download your wifi driver from your manufacturer's web site and reinstall it. Windows sometimes installs the wrong driver during setup/upgrades. This is a common problem and is easily fixable.

Quote:Windows is no longer doing minor patch updates they are doing full version updates. I now think about it after reading some of your guys comments on why Windows is doing these updates like a phone is because of their Windows phone that they created to rival with the iPhone and other Android devices.

It has less to do with Android/iPhone and more to do with macOS. When was the last time a Mac user had to pay for macOS? A decade ago? If you buy a Mac today then you have a reasonable expectation of receiving major macOS updates for close to a decade. Microsoft is treating Windows 10 the same way, and it's time for us to follow suit. That said, Microsoft is not doing a good enough job of it, mostly because they don't do enough to differentiate major updates from minor updates.

Do you really need a 1TB+ SSD? Just get a smaller one (256GB or 512GB) for your OS and software, then use a hard drive for your mass storage. Obviously this is harder to do on a laptop, but your mass storage could be an external HDD, or even the cloud if your Internet is fast enough.

SSDs are indeed the wave of the future, but until their $/GB matches hard drives there will always be a use for spinning platters. Hard drives suck at booting an OS and running applications, but they are great for mass data storage.

Absolutely, but presentation matters -- the human has to be able to interface with the damn thing. Smile

But that's why they did it - to create an interface that was friendly for a rapidly increasing number of touch devices on the market (including their own). Now, the execution certainly could have been better for non-touch devices, and Windows 10's hybrid Start menu is the solution that Windows 8 should've had from the outset. But in hindsight I can appreciate the gamble they took.

I just can't agree. Let iOS and Android or ChromeOS or whatever handle all that stuff. If Windows continues to get all cutesy and consumery, it's going to be even more difficult to justify rolling out future releases in a business environment.

You might be surprised. There is plenty of demand in the business/enterprise segment (which is Microsoft's bread and butter) for the kinds of devices that Microsoft's new UI designs are beginning to accommodate. Touchscreens and tablets aren't just toys that lowly home users use.

An important thing to keep in mind here is that Microsoft is much more resistant to change than a company like Apple. For instance, with OS X Apple ripped the bandaid off by completely abandoning support for natively running legacy software (i.e. for OS 9), and less than a decade later they did it again when they completely abandoned support for legacy hardware (PowerPC). Meanwhile Microsoft, for example, had to support Windows XP for three years longer than they originally planned and there are still companies paying for support for that shit. I mention this only to say that if Microsoft is doing something, it's safe to assume that there is decent demand for it. As I said before, we can argue over how changes like this should be made, but it should be clear that the old Explorer UI is no longer a viable one-size-fits-all UI. That doesn't mean that it's ever going to disappear completely, but it will continue evolving.
