(February 4, 2018, 11:46 pm)evokombat For those who are using a variation of Linux, how is it compared to Windows 10 and MacOS in terms of supportive apps and features, specifically office suite and photo editing? Also how's gaming on it?

I've too been wondering since Windows is becoming more and more frustrating to use due to Microsoft making it act more like a smartphone than an OS, and Macs offer mediocre performance for high prices. It's like after Steve Jobs died, Apple turned to shit. Like really, who'd pay $2000 for a laptop with a touchscreen that replaces the top row of keys? Also the whole "Let's remove every peripheral that most people still use, and replace them with a couple of USB C ports" idea is probably the dumbest one they've had in a long time.

But back to Linux, I've been following Ubuntu 18.04 lately as they finally decided to ditch the Unity interface and are offering some very promising new features.

This has become a necessity due to touchscreen laptops and Windows tablets like the Surface Pro. Windows 8 started the trend by being the first touch-friendly version of Windows, but a lot of the Explorer shell UI elements (meaning outside of the Modern UI) were a pain in the ass to use if you were tapping instead of pointing and clicking. Windows 10 has moved some of the Modern-UI-like elements into Explorer (e.g. the Settings app to supplant/replace the Control Panel) and they are harder to fat-finger.

This is, I think, the sole reason Apple has thus far refused to put a touchscreen on any macOS devices. They know they will have to redesign the macOS UI to accommodate and they don't want to.

I'm going to disagree here, as long as we're talking about Macs with SSDs instead of the 5400rpm drives. Macs are overpriced, no doubt, but they are premium hardware. I'd take a MacBook Pro over a shitty $500 Windows laptop any day.

Yeah, they missed the mark with the USB-C stuff, and I really doubt they'll reverse course on that like everyone wants them to. It's a shame because those laptops look pretty badass, but I wouldn't buy one if I have to descend to another Circle of Dongle Hell.

I miss the days when Windows was focused strictly on productivity. Windows 8 was so bad I refused to install it anywhere at all, but Windows 10 isn't much better -- instead of being 100% bad, it's like 50% bad... all the ick of the new UI is spinkled here and there, but the good old stuff is buried in there and still accessible, as if Microsoft just wants to confuse the hell out of us.

Microsoft missed the mark on non-PCs and aren't going to catch up to the competition, and every time they try, they embarrass themselves even worse. Sad And I say this as a total MS fanboy!

Windows 7 was the last decent OS for me. And another thing I don't like nowadays is how laptops are now being built with the ram/hdd permanently soldered onto the motherboard so you'll have no way of upgrading it down the road.

It seems that we are all having problems with the latest version of Windows 10. My laptop came with Windows 7 then I was able to get the free upgrade to Windows 10 for my laptop. Then last year when I did the latest Windows 10 version update it corrupted my had drive. I was able to get it back to Windows 10 Version 1603. That's because Windows Version 1709 is not compatible with my laptop. Now my laptop forced me to upgrade to Windows 10 Version 1709 and I have no WiFi. I'm currently using Ethernet to go online when I'm home.

Windows is no longer doing minor patch updates they are doing full version updates. I now think about it after reading some of your guys comments on why Windows is doing these updates like a phone is because of their Windows phone that they created to rival with the iPhone and other Android devices.

Well as a former IT consultant and Microsoft partner, I feel your pain. You should still be able to get drivers working though that might end up being more complex than one might like or be able to do, another option is to use a Linux distro instead, biggest reason to turn Linux is getting sick of Microsoft's shit

I've planned on sticking with Windows 7 until the support for it ends in a couple of years, then jump ship to Linux Mint since not only a lot does it have a lot of support, but you can run the majority of Windows applications with WineHQ and PlayonLinux plus unlike Windows, it's all free.

So you want to stick with the lagging when looking at a website or looking at your emails?

Not after I save up enough for a 240gb SSD and 16gb of ram. Even though that's overkill for simple tasks, that should futureproof for a good few years.

Solid State is the way of the future. Are you planning on dividing it up into smaller portions to store stuff? Or just leave it the way it is? I would love to get a solid state but I want mine to be in tb than gb.
