Sorry... but I'm siding with 17 posts in the past 5 years guy on this one. Setting up a go fund me for FORTY DOLLARS just seems cheap af. I can appreciate the good quality work and content he puts out, but seriously? C'mon.

Phil may not want to take too much of our money, I mean if you were to ask for money from a community that enjoys this stuff, but usually won't pay for content, would you ask for a big amount or little?

He has already done a lot for us, why don't we help him out when he needs it?

I usually don't engage in these forums, but looks like someone already beat you guys to the punch when it comes to the donations.

I mean.... Would you rather he ask for a new computer entirely?  I don't see what your qualm is.  A) If you don't want to, don't support it. B) Would you rather he took these to patreon or something?  If it's such a small amount of money that it makes him "cheap af" I guess you can feel that way but crowd funding is meant to distribute the burden of payment.  So this optional request (because, again, you don't have to pay for it personally) could literally be covered by 1$ each paid by 40 people.

The guy does a good job of bringing the content together and he's being frugal with his request.  Idk. Have your opinion, you do you, but I'm perfectly fine supporting projects like this.

Oh, and PS the picture of the pregnant lady, is absolutely not a great idea.  This we agree on.

First of all, thank you very much to the person who donated 55 dollars. I really didn’t expect such a generous gesture, and can’t tell you how happy it made me.

But, I have to pass along more bad news. My laptop is completely dead now.

I got the hard drive, did the swap, and as the OS was downloading, something in my computer fried. And I mean fried litterally, smoke came out of the damn thing. Now it won’t even power on. I am officially without a computer.

I am not just going to pocket the donated money though. I’m putting aside to start saving up for a new laptop, or tablet, or SOMETHING. With my upcoming tax return, and some careful budgeting, I might be able to buy one toward the end of Spring.

Long story short, its going to be a few months (at least) until I can make compilations again. I have one that I uploaded to YouTube just before my hard drive started dying. I’ll go through it for timestamps and post it here in the next week or two. The last hurrah before a begrudging hiatus.

Thank you all for being understanding and supportive.

Sounds like an extraordinarily bad run of luck, Phil. Sorry to hear that.

(February 3, 2019, 6:11 pm)McKormick This is where Mac shines. I keep getting prompts daily to change my operating system. I ignore them. My hard drive crashed about a year ago. I took it to have it repaired. Dude wanted $100 for it as its out of warranty. I told him Id rather buy a PC. This is in a PC store mind you so they had PCs all around. He was a MAC specialist that they had on call. He told me and they agreed, fix the Mac. Thing has been running ten years strong and this is the only issue? Fix the Mac. They told me to my face Id be lucky to have a PC last four years and to fix the Mac.

Now look, Im not trying to campaign for Apple / Mac. I say each have their benefits and man do I hate trying to game on this thing but I will say this. I feel like Apple youre paying up front for the computer to last whereas with the PC its kinda up in the air. Apple you can buy insurance for up to four years IIRC. Hard drive crash? They got you. I had that happen my first year and they replaced it without an issue. PC? Oh sorry sir. I switched to Mac for college and I have yet to find a PC offer as much in regards to reliability as Mac does.

I'm late to the party on this but this is something about which I have strong feelings. As a card-carrying Windows/PC fanboy, I will be the first to admit that most Windows laptops are garbage. If you're spending less than $500 on it at Best Buy or Walmart or some other place like that, the laptop is going to suck and the support is going to suck. And by "support" I don't just mean technical support, but also driver support and BIOS updates. You're lucky to get such updates for a year with most consumer systems, and that seriously cuts back on the longevity of those computers. Even a lot of $500-1000 Windows laptops suffer from the same drawbacks. And most PC brands suck. Acer? Asus? Toshiba? Get out of here with that shit.

What does Apple do well? Although you certainly pay a premium for the logo on the back of the screen, you're also getting a high-end system that will reliably receive OS and driver updates for nearly a decade (and now that most Macs contain SSDs they won't slow down as much as older models did). Yes, you can get AppleCare for three years of warranty coverage and accidental damage protection. The proliferation of Apple brick-and-mortar stores means that you can likely get support in person without having to drive too far. If you decide to sell the computer, it holds its value better than any PC laptop. And while PC manufacturers try to be all things to all people and make almost any configuration possible, Apple makes it extremely easy to buy one of their computers by keeping the number of options to a minimum. (That is, of course, a blessing and a curse.)

However, Apple is not unique with most of these things. High-end ($1000+) business PC laptops will generally be 10-20% under an equivalent MacBook price, have equal or better spec, they will receive driver and BIOS updates for several years, and extended warranties and accidental damage protection from the factory are available for them. My last Windows laptop lasted six years, and I only replaced it because I wanted something smaller and lighter. If you know how to shop for a PC laptop, you can get a better deal on a system that will make you just as happy as a MacBook would unless you are absolutely dependent on the macOS ecosystem.

Also, re: the post above, I bet that HP piece of shit you bought didn't cost anywhere near a MacBook Pro, or even a MacBook Air. Apples (pun intended) and oranges.

Anyway, that's my two cents.

@Admin can we put a stop to these kinds of threads where people just talk and dont post? I thought that's what the discussion section was for?

I mean, the current discussion in this thread has been about the content of the thread itself so I do not see why people shouldn't be allowed to discuss things in this thread when it is relevant to what is posted in it
