I'm overwhelmed by core, script-related issues at the moment and am wary of investing time in improving what has become an intractably outmoded script (unless the function is easy to incorporate.) Without building an interface from scratch, there's no straightforward way to achieve mobile usability (for instance) or features like the one you're suggesting. This is disappointing and we'd rather stick with MyBB, but we're once again exploring the possibility of migrating to Xenforo. MyBB is dying as a project and this became apparent through 2017.

We own a licenses for Xenforo and WoltLab and will construct a test forum, on a related URL, for significant contributors (yourself and others) to play around with. This test forum will use a backup from 2014 to limit the time needed for conversion -- the final version will obviously contain all data.

I'm looking at NodeBB too. Seems promising.
