I am curious about the various larger ISPs out there,
which ones are the better ones, and which ones best to avoid (and why)?

Frontier's service is questionable at best, as are their business practices. They purchased FiOS from Verizon a few years back and have made a right mess of things. Someone's going to have to buy/bail them out soon.

How much an ISP sucks is largely regionally dependent, and can even differ across different parts of the same city. Newer neighborhoods with newer infrastructure often have better Internet than older neighborhoods just by the virtue of the fiber/coax/twisted pair cable on the poles or underground being newer. Same goes for newer/renovated houses vs. older/unrenovated houses, newer/renovated apartments vs. older/unrenovated apartments, etc.

So it’s hard to pin any ISP down as always good or always bad. Any ISP, that is, except CenturyLink, which is a fucking disaster everywhere.
