Missed opportunities abound. I used to work at a café, and fortunately for me, there were a lot of early 30s patrons, five or six women, who got pregnant once or twice over a three-year period. Two of these women were extra keen on getting their bellies out.

The other patron, Simone, got pregnant with her fifth. She was one of the older mums, maybe late 30s, sporty and a cross fitter. Her belly grew to be the second biggest of the regular Mums. She was chatting with one of the regulars while I ran and made coffee. The other patron, who hadn't been in for some time, remarked that they didn't know Simone was expecting. I remember several years ago my cousin's cousin (cousin from the other side of the family) was pregnant. The three of us where pretty close, and we where having lunch a couple weeks before she ended up giving birth. We started talking about how she was doing, and if she was ready to be a mother. I also remember a few days after this she showed up at a family member's graduation party, wearing a long black maternity dress. Again, the dress was still quite tight on her belly and I could see her belly button again. We talked for a while, specifically about the cupcakes that someone made, and how they should start their own baking business. I joked that if they needed room for a billboard, her belly would work perfectly. She laughed, and throughout the afternoon we had found several stickers and put them on her dress over her belly. I even got to stick one onto her belly button, which felt very nice, and it made her jump when I pressed the sticker on!

Over a decade ago, when l was something 19-20.
