tl;dr (summary version):

I'm thinking about to sharing my actively updated iPhoto 14 GB mostly pregnant porn collection read-only over BTSync. Are people interested? Would people actually use it? Thoughts?

-------------

Probably uncomfortably long version:

So there's this relatively new peer-to-peer program called BitTorrentSync:

http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/sync.html

It is basically dropbox, but it uses the peer-to-peer network bittorrent.

What is bittorrent? All the clients share with each other. If you have 20 clients, downloading is superfast because you get data from all 20 clients at once. It also means that one server (even the server of the original uploader) can go down without much worry. However, it wasn't made to be sneaky, (like gnutella, tor, or freenet). It's very clear what clients are transferring which files. Up until now it was used to move legal and non legal files, mostly linux install cds and archived files in a very discrete "here is the *.zip you wanted". BTSync has a different use model where folders are shared and as soon as any single file is changed that trickles out to the network.

There is an interesting social phenomenon emerging where you can share a shared folder hash (a short text string) and a community of people have full read/write access on the whole shared folder, or you can share a readonly hash (and there is some preliminary work with 24 hour access hashes).

I use iPhoto for my porn (on a dedicated system account, I'm not *that* dumb), %80 of which is pregnant. It's not the *easiest* directory structure navigate on the file system level, but it's not encrypted. However, without using the a iPhoto client to read the db, you don't get the benefit of my borderline OCD sorting of images into albums. Unclear if this is a bug or a feature. But I'm sure many of you do have iPhoto anyhow. And I'd be willing to bet that you could pause the BTSync daemon and open iPhoto on the library dir in place.

I'm also open to a regularly scheduled job dumping my iPhoto albums into a sensible directory structure, but I'll wait to see if anyone takes me up on the BTSync share first.

It's 14GB and I'd be willing to read-only share it to the community. Some issues to consider, good and bad:

1) The clients are in their infancy, so you can't say, "hey I don't want this folder". I have some full flickr downloads that take up lots of space. That's a packrat thing. Horders: Digital Edition could do an ep on me.
2) It is constantly updated from my laptop and server, so my more or less daily updating of my collection is automatically pushed out, as opposed to the slower process of making archives and putting them on mediafire or whatever. And the log tells you when new files have been pushed. So I can share my collection without thinking about it.
3) The traffic is encrypted, so some random narc at Comcast can't see the data, but I'm posting that hash on a semi-public site, so anyone looking can see the data. SOOOO...
4) If you're a member of the btsync folder group the IP address and client identifying sting of anyone participating is visible as well as the files being requested. SOOO...
5) If I were to have an illegal file, anyone could look at this forum, read the hash, get the client, and record the IP's of everyone who downloaded that illegal file. HOWEVER....
6) I am very careful about underage, non-consensual, animal and otherwise illegal or borderline illegal porn. So if you were to join this group, you would be trusting me to follow the law, but that is something that is very important to me. But the safe harbor excuse (I'm just hosting the file, I don't control it!) really has a mixed record in court, and when judges hear "bittorrent" they tend to freak out.
7) If I do set up this share and people use it, I check my messages on this forum, so if you find something sketchy in my collection please tell me. I have no desire to skirt these laws, and I know that file sharing can implicate others.

And lastly, hackers are starting to setup "collections" of BTSync folders, because it's easy to have lots of them with unique hases. A folder for the latest interesting papers. A folder for the latest coding music. A folder for the latest cat gifs. It would be interesting to see if many people on this forum did read-only shares of all their libraries, so we would be constantly updating each other with out newest finds and we would be hosting bulky files and videos on our machines, which talkes some of the heaviest file load off of our wonderful forum host. Of course, such a phenomenon would be dominated by people with more disk space than they know what to do with, and not you new fangled kids and your phones and ipads and rock and roll music. So I don't think what I'm suggesting would kill this forum, but rather enhance it.

how do we connect to you?

You'd download the BTSync client and insert the text string I gave you.

So I did an initial setup between my laptop and my server, and the protocol worked like a champ, but browsing the files without an iPhoto client is much more of a nightmare than I thought, I'd be embarrassed for non-iPhoto users to waste their bandwidth on my collection and get pretty much zero of my organization. So I'm experimenting with a python scripts called iphotoexport that dumps my photos into album based directories. Once I'm happy with the result, I'd post the BTSync text string to this thread.

Stay tuned.

i look forward to getting that text string so we can begin to share.

I wouldn't mind getting in on this. Sounds like a better solution than DC++ which has sucked on my Mac every time I have tried to use it.

I would love to get the key for your share -- organization be damned I'll probably reorganize it too my folders anyway

I know this is a super old thread.... But are you still around and still considering doing the BTSync? I added the key but it doesn't work anymore.
