Just got back from the local garden centre for a couple of things. While I was there, I saw a youngish girl - I can't really give an estimate as she was quite short, but I'd swing for early 20's? What was immediately noticeable was that she was carrying quite a large bump. She was with two older women (I'm guessing mother and grandmother) so I kept my distance, but I was sure I saw her look at me a few times.
I noticed the 3 of them went into the cafe, so I got my things and paid. I just had this "what the hell" moment and went into the cafe as well (this must have been a good 5-10 minutes after them) and her and her who-I-assume-to-be mother were still waiting to be served. They were the only ones waiting, so I joined the queue, and after picking up on what the mother was asking about, told her the range of jams and passed her one. Throughout, she'd been stroking her belly, but otherwise was ambivalent to my presence.
Then I really picked up my courage and asked how far along she was, "7 months" and what she was having "a little girl". I didn't really know what to say much after, and since she was wanting to pay separately, mother left and she was alone to order. Once no one else was around, I just went for it: "I was wondering if I could get your number?"
Her face was a bit of a picture - not huge shock, but definitely surprise - but she smiled and said no. After she paid and left for her table, she obviously told her companions what I'd said. I heard a definite"Did he?!" over the general hubub of the cafe.
Oh well, better luck next time.
