I'm with you. Morphs that strain credulity are a turnoff IMHO

Totally. I used to really enjoy some of Codaman's morphs. They are pushing that boundary where you ask yourself 'can this be real?' - that's the sweet spot i think

Agreed all around. I have been guilty of pushing the limits no doubt. That is why I often do morphs in several steps as see you are doing.
Grey Fox, I'm not sure what you mean by skin tones, but I almost always do some work with the dodge and burn tools to add shading to the bellies after they are expanded (especially if they are bare skin). I also use some special brush shapes to simulate veins or stretch marks. Both of these need to be used carefully as I find it easy to be overdone.

Yeah, i know your hesitance to push it too much, and i always prefer the ones you do that are maybe second or third stage - i don't get those people who are asking for moarrr when it comes to morphs.
By skin tones i mean that the problem i find is the liquify tool distorts the texture of the skin in an unnatural way that i can't seem to fix after... clothing is way easier because the texture doesn't look so different from what it was before. Dark colours especially are easier to fix with the heal tool, but on skin it doesn't quite work out

Ha, that's funny because I find that I am better a correcting the bare skin texture than clothing. I have never used the heal tool, so that is something I want to try out. What program are you using?
But going back to what I do to correct the skin texture, it is all free handed. Using a paint brush with a veiny like texture in reds/blue/purple first, then the shading with dodge/burn tool. I occasionally paint actual skin tone colors with a spray-paint like brush depending on what the skin looks like after the expansion (I would do that if needed before any of the aforementioned steps).
I show these steps in the tutorial I did a while back, steps 11 and 12 (note that since I've wrote up this tutorial I switched the order of these steps, since it usually comes out better that way):
