This is a known issue with Firefox and MyBB. Posting the link directly works and it will be active. Are you able to experiment with a different browser to confirm that it is related to FireFox?

Hey patdiddy -- I'm not suggesting switching over to Chrome permanently, but I'd like to confirm that your problem is indeed related to Firefox. This is an issue I have to deal with too (being an FF user) and it arose spontaneously. There might be a simple fix.
If the issue cannot be remedied and if you're intent on continuing to use FF, the link button isn't necessary to post an active URL -- just post the link directly into the text field of the editor. It's only needed in order to make text into a link.

I tried with safari 5.1.1, and, although its grossly outdated (its the last version for my os), it does seem to be only happening with firefox
