From the sites I mentioned , as a bonus provide some extra privacy to family, I’m guessing I’d do that through a router and not a browser extension? Netgear routers seem to be able to configured with vpns although I wonder if that’s to extreme for what I’m trying to do.

To be honest I never used a VPN. I've only used through Google Chrome and Mozzilla FireFox their private windows to do certain stuff. Pretty much what a VPN stops hackers, trackers and online spies from seeing your activity. Please note that I'm grabbing this information from VPN dedicated sites. I also looked up if Netgear is a good VPN extension and it's bad. I'll PM you a list of sites to look at really good VPNs for you to read up on and see which ones you would like
