Over the past two weeks I've made a point of debugging and analyzing as much of the site as possible. In doing so, I discovered a few portions of code which are extremely taxing. Having removed this code, the index page in particular appears to be loading 20 times faster (200 ms instead of 4 seconds).
Feedback would be appreciated. We still plan to move hosts, however this change alone seems to have improved things dramatically.

This change was implemented at around 1:00 pm EST today (January 13). The site now utilizes 30% to 40% of the server's CPU resources and 5% to 10% of our database resources. This is in contrast to 70% to 100% for CPU and 70% to 120% for database usage beforehand.
Please vote or comment. I need to gauge how the site is performing for others.

I can easily notice a change, will do some more testing when I'm home and not using 4G data

i noticed that the site was down the other night, and assumed the previously mentioned updates were happening. everything loads so much faster now. there were big lags just loading the homepage sometimes before, now it's instantaneous.
also, picture previews load much faster now. there was serious lag loading large pictures. now it's all fast

I just came here to say the picture dump was fast as hell. I dumped a whole progression and it uploaded quick. Noticable improvement. Overall the site seems to be running great.

Thanks all -- very glad to hear that this fix worked. As mentioned, the site will be hosted elsewhere soon and the script will be upgraded soon (the biggest improvement will be proper, conversation-style PMs). In the meantime, I'll be making the few remaining (non-mobile) pages mobile-friendly, particularly the private messaging section.
