I think having a dislike button on individual posts could be good. Kind of like reddit. Doesn't have to be anonymous but could be

Then you'll have people whining about being "downvoted" just like on reddit.

I'm not against a downvote function, though like @"tonythepreggoPony" said, it would invite bickering if not anonymous. The closest thing we have to that function right now is the star rating system.

Is this something you envision for threads primarily (as opposed to individual posts)? Right now, stars are not visible on mobile interfaces, unless you open the thread itself, but we can change that to a dropdown.

I am referring to posts, not threads. The whining is inevitable but worth the benefit I think. We need to clearly display what kind of posts are high vs low quality.

Isn't that the reason for the star system that's already being used?

For threads, not posts. There could be low quality posts in a high quality thread

Which shouldn't be an issue. If a person wants to chime in a thread, then let them without feeling the need to downvote them just because they don't meet your quality standards.

The dislike button is one of the worse things about Reddit, and has no place being on this site. If you want better site moderation so arguments don't break out as often, then that's fine. Just don't try and silence people with downvotes.

I think this would be a dark path to go down and I'm someone else who wouldn't like to see this implemented on our community. It would just cause unnecessary animosity amongst members.

If I don't like a post or a thread, I simply won't read it any more. I'll move on. I don't see what benefit it would be to 'dislike' something which, to others, may be fine for them. We're all different at the end of the day and whilst our fetish is broadly the same, we all have certain elements about it that some like which others don't and vice-versa.

I'm not overly keen on the star system if I have to be completely honest, but I've grown used to it over the years. I'd rather make my own mind up and see it for myself first rather than judge a thread by how many stars it has. That's simply my humble opinion though.

I'm inclined to agree with the arguments against post-specific dislikes or downvotes. While it could be anonymous, it doesn't strike me as constructive. A lack of likes is close enough for individual posts, and a low star rating serves this function at the thread level.
