yesterday i couldn't access the site at all. checked isitdown, and they said the site was running.

@auto_asphyx can you post here if this happens again? There were some issues over the past couple of days which (I'm hoping) have been resolved, at least partially.

So this problem is tied to sporadic spikes in entry processes. Our current host has atrocious customer support, and their service sucks in general, so we're unable to even identify the likely culprit (specific PHP file, line, error, whatever). I have a replacement host in mind -- it's time to begin migrating the site.
