So what's the issue here? Sri Lankan is an nationality and their ancestors probably originate from India. Indian is both a race and nationality.

Even though Sri Lanka is part of the Indian sub continent, they are still their own nation. 
And Indian is not a race. The race for India would be Asian. Indian is a nationality. 
Also, to be on the safe side, it’s better to refer to people from countries like Sri Lanka as desi. That’s being on the safe side, but there are some that don’t even identify with being called desi. So what makes you think they’d like being called Indian?
