Hi

This is my first ever attempt at a story.Thinking of up to 10 parts, depending on how it goes. It may waffle on a bit especially at the beginning but stick with it. I would welcome comments as to what you guys think.

SP70

one

Alexander,

That is your name, Alexander. I am writing this because we owe it to you, I owe it to you. I'm Anatoly Vyaschev, Head of research here. “Here” is SP70, Suitable Planet 70. Not the prettiest name, we have come to call it home. It is our 67th year here, my 24th, I was born here. A year here is roughly 16 months by Earth scale. The year on Earth is 2230. Let me explain everything…

You were born in England, in a town called Portsmouth. I don't know your exact date of birth, you were about 23 when you came to us. There was massive fighting on Earth, and you have joined the army of the British, in their most elite regiment. You excelled in training, and when you were 20 you were sent with your comrades to join the NATO special forces in Eastern Germany. It was seen very much as the last stand in the war, it had raged for almost 50 years with untold death and destruction. As you can imagine, the hatred was palpable on both sides. The date was 12th December 2121 made even more symbolic by been the date being 12/12/2121, “Judgement Day”. Religious leaders were desperately looking through their scriptures to find any code there linked to 12/12/2121 but of course it was simply a date, more to do with the fact that Christmas was a few weeks away, and the ultimatum for a peace deal was supposed to be New Years Day.

Anyway, the battle commenced, devastatingly for the German people, with advanced machines on both sides being recklessly and ruthless used by both sides, men hardly able to operate their tools that were so effective in destroying their own existence. During the battle, personnel like yourselves were obsolete; you were fit, intelligent, specimens of real beauty, but in that situation utterly useless. You were dodging the missiles just like the poor German kids. And our plan fell into place perfectly. You and the other elite troops from NATO were caught and sent to our labs. Both sides in the conflict knew that regardless of the battles' result, Earth was screwed. It was liveable, but only for a much smaller population, and they could not live like we were, tearing the planet to shreds just to exert philosophy and politics on their won territories. The Americans did the same as us, using the strongest, most intelligent, most adaptable humans available, obviously not their own because it would be unforgivable to use a good honest citizen. Use the enemies good honest citizens instead.

So there we were, in January of 2122, both the US and Russian space agencies set out on their journeys for new settlements. Regardless of the war and public hatred of each other, secretly the space plan had been agreed way back in 2012. Both sides agreed that once a planet is discovered that could be settled by man, it would go to the Russians or the US in equal share. Incredibly, despite everything, as both sides set of in the full knowledge that the other had thousands of its best troops the 138 Suitable Planet's known were split evenly. As far as I know, all planets were settled by the scientist and projects were set up on both sides. As I write this, I know that 13 of the 69 the US had have successfully been colonised (I say colonised, we are talking 2 or 3,000 people on each planet) and Russia has colonised 8 of theirs. Earth is doing very well now that the there are options avaible on other planets, people are working hard saving to buy their new lives on their “New World”

Alexander, this is the twist. You, being as smart as you are, will have noticed that SP70 should not exist. Why would we have 69 planets but name one 70? This is the unofficial planet. No one knows we are here. The only people who have knowledge of this mission are here right now. They told no one else. We are in Andromeda Galaxy. We were not allowed to be under international law, as to not get to advanced to quickly without telling the rest of humanity. But when would you ever trust a human? I'm more surprised that no-one had tried it. It was so hard to spot, but when we found it we knew this was it, truly, The New Earth. Everything about it was perfect. An Ozone layer, seasons, good rainfall, acceptable weather. An incredible abundance of wildlife and plant life. But most importantly: not one intelligent species. There was very smart pack animals, forms of big cat, not unlike Tigers but a little smaller, that hunt in packs in the forests, and many apes, some very similar to chimpanzees, they will almost certainly be hard to tame. But the amount of crop food and ready-to-domesticate livestock, I am not a religious man, but if I were, I was say this truly is a God's gift. And so, we settled down, 3,000 scientists and their families, and 5,000 European, American and Canadian kidnapped soldiers. We went to work, forming villages, farming, making infrastructure. I say we, it was all you. It was wrong, we were against it on the whole, treating you as slaves, not teaching you Russian so you couldn't ever understand our plans, and worse, the experiments were cruel. We became increasingly argumentative, the Russians, at our differing views of treatment. I was the head of research but all I wanted was the let you all go free. At that stage I was a prisoner myself. The women and children were kept away in a separate village and a select group of generals, they called themselves, held us all captive.

The best scientists, me amongst them, were forced to conduct increasingly torturous tests on you all. Many of you were becoming seriously ill, some dying. That was the final straw. Me and a few colleagues agreed that we were destined for death anyway, and this would become a planet of savagery if we didn't act. So we hatched our plan. We let you free. Only, this was not ideal. That is why when you regain consciousness you will find yourself in a very strange state indeed.

There were 1,400 of you let free. Of those, there are just six who you must avoid. They possess the same thing as you: immortality. Don't get me wrong, you cannot be shot in the head and survive. You can be injured but providing you find shelter, you will recover. If someone wants to kill you, they can. If your heart stops beating, you die. Simple. You can feel pain, like a mortal. You can feel aches, pains, stress, you will live exactly as a mortal. Except you will live, and live, and live. I have moved you far away from the facility and given you an extremely strong injection. You will remember absolutely nothing of your life. You will have all the skills you have ever accumulated but not know why. You will speak English, you will feel emotion. Everything that makes you human. I only hope that you use your instinct and run the fuck away from this place.

As I write this I can hear gunfire far in the distance. The other 6 have one thing on their mind. Murder. You must not meet them, they will only try to kill you. In which case, you must kill them, and properly. Breaking a leg or knocking them out and leaving them will be suicide. They will hunt you.

As for me, I have a wife, Katya, that I have not seen for 3 years and a daughter, Roksana, who will be 5 now. They are almost certain to be dead. The guards are being swept aside, my family will be next. I wish I could have protected them.

Good luck Alex, I don't know what the future holds but I can only hope that you make a life for yourself, defeat the hunters and meet a woman, if there are any left. At least they could translate this letter for you…

Peace,

Anatoly

I think the only concern I would have would be the reference that SP70 is in the Andromeda Galaxy. You could just as easily, and more realistically, make the planet and colony in a different arm of the Milky Way.

A bit confused. It seems the colonists in control are Russian (since they refer to the American kidnapped soldiers), so why name the planet SP70 after the number of American planets and not S9?
