Maybe I'm just clueless, but is there any way to search for specific terms within existing threads, and if that isn't a feature, then why not?

Well you can search for specific keywords across the whole forum via the magnifying glass at the top. And you can search for specific keywords within individual threads. The search bar for threads is near the bottom.

Bottom right. Scroll to the bottom, beneath the "NEW REPLY" button is a search thread function.
