 He did just fine in my opinion. Taking candids requires being as covert as possible. Sometimes getting closer is not possible. You take what you can get while being mindful of avoiding making contact with her and avoiding doing anything that makes her feel uncomfortable.

Being closer rarely seems to be suspicious, you have the right to walk wherever you want. So you just get past the lady with your phone on the side, and then you pretend to talk on the phone. Boom you have the nice candid, thats what i was doing at my beginning. Now its a bit advanced fun

It’s risky enough walking around trying to record women with a smart phone out in public where lots of random people might see you pointing it at your target. Getting a close up is not worth the risk of getting yourself into a potentially embarrassing situation. If it is not possible don’t go for it. You have to be satisfied with what the situation allows you to get. This is his first candid hunt so he took the pics from a safe distance. Everyone is different. If he feels comfortable capturing images from a far he should not be made to feel he needs to do more than he is comfortable doing.

Or - here's a thought - grow a pair and talk to them? Find a reason to talk to them without being weird: ask for help deciding something, or wish them well, use COVID as an excuse. This is probably one of the LEAST suspicious and most promising way to get a great shot. Instead of following them around or suggest you're playing a weird game or acting like you're on the phone something bringing attention. And do so without tryna capture just any old pregnant belly...only go for the huge ones.

We're gonna miss out on ALOT of huge bellies by people being timid. Start the camera, talk to her, let it run and edit the video later. I'm willing to bet I have the best huge belly candids.

To answer the poll question, yes you should continue to take candids. There is nothing wrong with being “timid” In fact it is our body’s natural way of making sure we don’t throw away caution when faced with situations that could go wrong for us.

It doesn’t matter what approach you use if you decide to make contact with a pregnant woman on the street or in a public place and talk to her. From her prospective you are a stranger so her guard will be up and she may feel a bit uncomfortable.

This is why it is my opinion that making contact with the subject is not a good idea. Smart candid hunters blend into the crowd and obtain their footage discretely.

Whatever you choose to do, don’t make capturing footage of a woman’s pregnant belly so important that you end up making bad decisions to get it. No matter how huge it is always be smart. If you can’t get the footage without drawing attention to yourself let it go.
