It's the exif data (information stored about the camera in JPEGs). The image is actually flipped, but most programs (like the web browser) read the exif data and see that it should be rotated, so it looks fine.
When images are embeded on a web page (like the thumbnails or lighbox), the browser ignores the exif information. But when you click it looks fine, because the browser reads the exif, and knows it needs to be rotated.

To 'fix' it, simply put the images in an image editor and save a copy. Simply stripping the exif data won't work, unfortunately.

PS: I've attached a version saved in Photoshop, with normal orientation.

:edit: It seems cellphones default orientation sideways (makes sense I guess), but save the correct orientation in the exif data. When I take an image with my phone vertical, and remove the exif, it flips sideways. Kind of interesting, I've never noticed this before.
